About us

Jacqui and Ellie

We're Jacqui and Ellie – two friends who firmly believe that a city is only as good as its bułka.

This blog is a place for us to document our adventures, mostly through the lens of: "where are we eating, and was the bread worth the walk?"

Mainly written for our friends and family back in Australia, who we dearly miss. And to the new friends we've met on our journey: we're glad you're with us.

We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we've enjoyed writing it.

What is bułka?

Bułka (pronounced boow-ka) is the Polish word for a small bread roll, the kind best enjoyed fresh and still warm from a bakery.

About the domain name

“That looks like a virus.”(Jacqui's sister, after seeing xn--buka-11a.com)
“Is that a new strain of COVID?”(Zac, after seeing xn--buka-11a.com)

The domain is bułka.com, with the Polish letter Ł. Unfortunately, this character confuses a lot of platforms because it looks like a phishing attempt. Because Ł is outside standard ASCII, the domain gets encoded via Punycode behind the scenes:

bułka.com = xn--buka-11a.com

In any case, you can also access our blog via the less suspicious-looking bulka.blog.
